Let's add color to your table and greens into your meal! This Easy Green Hummus is a festive and tasty way to make sure you're filling up with nutritious, flavorful, plant-based protein.
Have you ever made your own hummus? It's surprisingly easy to whip up a batch, and I think that it's one of those dishes that just tastes better when it's made from scratch. I can think of nearly endless ways to use hummus, but our favorite is simply as a dip for veggies! This Easy Green Hummus recipe is just right for St. Patrick's Day (how cute would it be on a St. Patrick's Day Snack Board?), but it's so delicious that we make it year round. Enjoy!
Easy Green Hummus Recipe
Yes, you can buy hummus already made at the store, but did you know just how easy it is to make in your own kitchen? Hummus takes just a few minutes in the food processor to become the creamy, protein-rich snack of your dreams. Since chickpeas are so affordable it's also a really budget-friendly dish! Simply add all of the ingredients to a high-speed blender and get to blending. That's it! Take a taste, adjust the flavors so it's just right, and you're ready to start dipping and spreading.
Health Benefits of Hummus
This Easy Green Hummus is filled with good-for-you ingredients that taste amazing. Chickpeas, a nutritional powerhouse with many benefits, are a plant-based source of protein that I use in SO MANY recipes! They are an excellent source of folic acid, do not contain any cholesterol, and they offer complex carbs. They are also full of fiber to keep you fuller longer and aid in digestion.
Tahini is made from sesame seeds, a plant-based source of protein, iron and calcium which is great for vegans. Tahini also provides omega 3, omega 6, magnesium and B-vitamins.
My Secret Ingredient for Smooth Hummus
A lot of people want to skip the crushed ice on this ingredient list, but TRUST ME on this one! Crushed ice doesn't make your hummus runny or watery. It almost acts as a second set of blender blades to further break down the ingredients as they combine in the blender. The result is a super-smooth, creamy, absolutely perfect hummus that tastes so fresh!
How to Garnish Hummus
I personally think a bowl of hummus with a couple garnishes makes such a beautiful display! It's also a really great way to add substance to your hummus if you want to enjoy it as a hearty snack or light meal. I like to garnish hummus with:
- Microgreens
- Fresh herbs: flat leaf parsley or dill
- Caramelized Onions
- A squeeze of fresh lemon
- A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
How to Enjoy Hummus
How do you hummus? I don't think there's a wrong way to enjoy this flavorful, savory dip! Some of my favorite ways to use hummus are...
- On Protein-Packed Avocado Toast
- Dipped with Easy Almond Flour Crackers
- As a base for Roasted Whole Rainbow Carrots
- Stuffed in Mini Bell Peppers
- On a Healthy After-School Snack Board
Storing Fresh Hummus
I love having hummus on hand for a quick snack or to spread on a wrap or sandwich. This recipe keeps for up to a week in the refrigerator in an airtight container, so you can make a double batch and snack on it all week!

Ingredients
- 1 (15-ounce can) garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained well (or 1.5 cups cooked chickpeas)
- ¼ cup runny raw tahini (oils well incorporated throughout)
- 1 lemon, juiced (~2-3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice)
- 1 cup crushed ice (trust me!)
- 1 large clove raw peeled garlic OR 4 cloves roasted garlic
- ½ teaspoon fine salt (or more to taste)
- 1-2 handfuls fresh parsley leaves, fresh dill or spinach or a combination of the three
- Garnish ideas: caramelized onions, Italian flat leaf parsley (large stems removed and leaves finely chopped), dill, lemon, extra virgin olive oil, and/or microgreens
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender. Process for one minute. Scrape down the sides with a mini spatula and process again until smooth and creamy and no ice chunks or parsley/dill/spinach bits remain. If it is too thick add up to ¼ cup filtered water 1 tablespoon at a time.
- Taste and adjust flavors as needed (you may want to add more lemon, salt, tahini or garlic).
- Transfer the hummus using the spatula to a serving dish and garnish with a dusting of chopped Italian flat leaf parsley, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of microgreens if desired.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to one week.
