These brightly colored Christmas Tree Waffles are such a fun way to add some holiday spirit to breakfast time. Decorate them with fruit, nuts, whipped cream, or eat them plain and enjoy every bite!

How to Make Christmas Tree Waffles

O Tannenbaum, o tannenbaum, how delicious are thy branches! These green Christmas Tree Waffles came from a little green food dye, my favorite grain-free waffle mix, and a circular waffle iron. I just cut the circle into quarters, stack them up, and decorate to my heart's content! We made a banana star and tree trunk with pomegranate and raspberry decorations. You could let your kids help dig around the pantry and refrigerator to find unexpected ways to decorate their trees. They could to a pretzel tree trunk, blueberry ornaments, miniature chocolate chips, chopped nut garlands...endless possibilities!

    Description

These brightly colored Christmas Tree Waffles are an easy and fun way to add holiday spirit to breakfast time!

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 batch of your favorite vegan and gluten-free waffles (I use Crispy Almond Flour Waffles)*
    • 1 bottle natural green food dye

    Christmas Tree Decorations:

    • raspberries/pomegranate arils (for ornaments)
    • coconut whipped cream and/or unsweetened shredded coconut flakes (for snow)
    • banana (for star)
    • vegan dark chocolate bar (for tree trunk)

    Instructions

    1. Mix together the waffle batter and the natural green food dye.  Be sure to see the note below to adjust the wet ingredients accordingly.
    2. Cook on the lowest temperature in your waffle iron.  If you have a round waffle iron you can use that to make the rounded triangle sections of the tree.  If you have a square waffle iron, pour the waffle batter into the center and allow the batter to spread into a circle but don't coat the entire pan so that the batter makes a circle shape.  Either way, when the waffle is done cooking you will use a knife to cut into four sections.
    3. Arrange the waffle sections into a Christmas tree shape as shown in the photos.  I only used three sections but if you have a large enough plate or platter you can use all four.  I ate the fourth waffle section as I was decorating!
    4. Decorate your Christmas tree with a banana or mango star using cookie cutters/shape cutters (linked below in equipment), a banana trunk and raspberry and/or pomegranate for ornaments.  You can add shredded coconut flakes for snow and coconut whipped cream as well.  Have fun with it and use whatever you have on hand!

    Notes

Because you will need a lot of green food dye to make this work you will want to omit the same amount of the liquid ingredient (water or milk) in your recipe and let the food dye replace it.  For example, my waffles call for ⅓ cup of water so I first fill the ⅓ cup measuring cup with a bottle of the green food dye and then I fill the rest of the measuring cup with water.  This way adding the liquid food dye will not throw off your dry/wet recipe ratio.
