When my son stopped wanting sandwiches in his lunches, I knew I had to get creative. I needed something just as satisfying, portable and nutritious. Enter these chocolate tahini bites: soft, chewy and fudgy bite-sized cubes that feel like a treat but are made with wholesome, pantry-staple ingredients.
This recipe is inspired by the Soom Double Chocolate Tahini Bites. They have rich chocolate flavor and are made from clean ingredients, but we were flying through bags faster than I could restock because my son kept grabbing them for his school lunch. One day when we ran out, I studied the ingredient list and got to work. After a couple trials, I landed on the perfect homemade version that he actually likes more than the original!
Now, I make a big batch each week and keep them in the fridge for a quick grab-and-go option. My son brings a handful to school in place of a sandwich and feels like he's getting dessert in his lunchbox, but I know he's getting whole grains, plant-based protein, healthy fats and natural fiber. Win-win!
Why You'll Love these Chocolate Tahini Bites
- Great for picky eaters
- Easily customizable in shape and size (think bars, bites or cubes)
- Ideal for school lunches, road trips or pre/post-workout snacks
- Satisfies late-night sweet cravings
- Quick and easy - no baking required!
Simple, Wholesome Ingredients
Dates are naturally sweet and sticky and bind everything together, while tahini adds creaminess and healthy fats. I definitely recommend Soom tahini (not sponsored) because their jars never cake up at the bottom like others do! A handful of vegan chocolate chips (I love Enjoy Life morsels) adds little bursts of sweetness and crunch, making these bites feel extra decadent without overdoing it.
How to Make These Chocolate Tahini Bites
1. Add all ingredients to a food processor and run until the mixture is crumbly and sticky.
2. Form the bites into small rectangles or cubes (whatever shape you like!).
3. Enjoy! I strongly recommend chilling them overnight to allow them to firm up but you can eat them immediately as well!
Pro Tips
- Use soft, fresh Medjool dates. Natural Delights is my go-to brand (not sponsored). If your dates aren’t soft to the touch, they may be too dry for this recipe.
- Runny tahini is key. The smoother and runnier your tahini, the better the mixture will bind. If your tahini is thick, dry, or cakey, it won’t blend as well and can affect the texture of the bites. A pourable consistency helps everything come together into a soft, fudgy dough.
- Add sesame seeds for a little crunch. It complements the tahini perfectly and also adds a nutrient boost! Hemp seeds would also be a good substitute here.
