This homemade electrolyte drink, lovingly known as "Nature's Gatorade," is a refreshing, energizing way to hydrate using just clean, nourishing ingredients. It delivers key minerals your body needs to support hydration at the cellular level without any refined sugars, dyes or additives. Simple to make, totally customizable and absolutely delicious, this is a natural solution that truly works!

Over the last couple years, I've been paying closer attention to what really supports my energy, and I've found that hydration is one of the most powerful (and often overlooked) factors. It's not just about drinking more water - it's about getting the right kind of hydration that actually fuels your cells. Once I began focusing on minerals and electrolytes, I noticed a real difference in how I felt throughout the day.
Yet, many of the popular drinks marketed for hydration and energy (i.e. Gatorade, and similar electrolyte beverages) are loaded with ingredients I try to avoid - artificial dyes, natural flavors, refined sugars and preservatives. Yes, they technically hydrate, but they also include a lot of extras I'd rather skip. My recipe below is also a great alternative to Pedialyte.
So, when "Nature's Gatorade" started to go viral on TikTok, I was intrigued. It's been around in various forms (sometimes called adrenal mocktails) but TikTok gave it a catchy name and new life. Everyone seems to have heir own spin (even athletes like Bryce Harper got in on it) and it inspired me to start experimenting with my own clean, effective and refreshing version made from real ingredients.

Why Make Your Own Electrolyte Drink?
Our bodies need both water and minerals to stay properly hydrated. Coconut water provides natural electrolytes like potassium and magnesium, while a good quality mineral-rich salt (containing sodium and trace minerals) helps support fluid balance and optimal absorption. This is why, especially during times of heat, stress, or physical activity, plain water alone sometimes just isn't enough to keep you feeling your best!
Personally, I've never loved the taste of plain coconut water, so pairing it with the right flavors was key for me. Blending it with fruit and a splash of citrus completely transforms the taste and makes it something I can sip any time I need a hydration boost.

The Simple Formula Behind Nature's Gatorade
I provide four drink flavors in the recipe card, and honestly, it's super easy to create even more! The base recipe is the same - coconut water, mineral salt, maple syrup, filtered water, and your choice of lemon or lime - then just add in different fruits or veggies to change up the taste and color.

Why These Ingredients Work
- Coconut Water: A natural source of electrolytes, especially potassium and magnesium. I personally love Harmless Harvest (not sponsored) - it's pink (naturally!), organic, fair trade, and contains just one ingredient.
- Mineral Salt: Not all salts are created equal! Skip the standard white table salt and choose an unrefined mineral-rich option like Redmond Real Salt (also not sponsored). These salts contain trace minerals that support hydration and electrolyte balance.
- Fresh Fruits and Veggies: Not only do they add flavor and beautiful color, but many fruits and veggies like watermelon, cucumber and citrus also contribute additional hydration and natural electrolytes. The possibilities here are endless and using fresh produce will sneak in other nutrition benefits beyond hydration.
How to Make Nature's Gatorade
I recommend using a high-speed blender and straining the drink over ice for the best flavor and texture. This gives you that smooth, refreshing consistency without any pulp.
Simply add all the ingredients except the ice to your blender. Blend for a full minute in a high speed blender to get the smoothest texture - this helps avoid waste and gets all those nutrients into your glass!

Then pour the contents over ice through a mini strainer above the glass to filter out any remaining chunks. Stir and enjoy!

Tip: It really is best served ice-cold. Let it chill for 30 seconds before sipping. Room temperature just doesn't hit the same!

Lemon or Lime?
Each recipe calls for a citrus boost, and both lemon and lime work beautifully. They're interchangeable - just choose based on your flavor preference or what you have on hand. Use the juice from 1 lemon or 2 limes (about ¼ cup total) per batch.

Customization & Flavor Notes
The best part about this recipe is how customizable it is. The ratio of ingredients stays consistent, but the flavor combinations are nearly endless. Try kiwi with lime, pineapple with lemon, or a refreshing cucumber-watermelon mix. I also love adding fresh herbs like mint or parsley for a little extra brightness and a pretty finish!
Here are my faves that are in the recipe card:

- Wild Blueberry Lemon - you only need ½ cup of blueberries for this one because their flavor is so concentrated.
- Watermelon Lime - Naturally sweet (my kids' favorite) and watermelon provides additional electrolytes as well to make it extra energizing.
- Cucumber Lime - Ultra-refreshing with a clean green color. The cucumber adds to the overall hydration since cucumbers contain so much water.
- Green Apple Lime - Tart and perfectly sweet (my personal favorite flavor!).
You can also use fresh or frozen berries like cherries, blackberries, strawberries, or raspberries - just be sure to blend well and always strain the mixture over ice before serving. The ice makes a big difference in taste (similar to traditional sports drinks) - it needs that chill to hit just right.

Pro Tips as you Experiment
- Start with ⅛ teaspoon salt and work your way up to taste.
- Adjust the maple syrup to your sweetness preference. My kids like to add a touch more to the cucumber flavor.
- Add more lemon or lime if you love citrus. I usually do!
- Remember: This drink isn't meant to taste exactly like Gatorade. It's about hydration, nourishment and feeling good!
Hydration is a small act of self-care that makes a huge difference. I hope you love these clean, energizing and colorful homemade drinks!

A note about electrolytes: I don't recommend skipping or substituting the coconut water - it's the key ingredient that delivers a natural blend of electrolytes like potassium, magnesium, and sodium, which are essential for proper hydration. Electrolytes help direct water into your cells (not just your bladder!), making hydration more effective. Watermelon adds even more hydration and a natural boost of potassium and magnesium, making this combo extra refreshing and energizing.
Don't skip the salt either! I recommend starting with ⅛ teaspoon of high-quality mineral salt (like Redmond Real Salt) and adjusting to taste. My kids prefer it less salty, but I'll go up to ¼ teaspoon after a workout. The salt helps round out the electrolyte profile and supports better fluid absorption.

Jackie says
This recipe sounds wonderful! Can you make a day or two in advance and keep it in the fridge?
Elaine Gordon says
Thanks so much, Jackie! Yes — you can absolutely make it a day or two in advance. Just store it in an airtight glass container in the fridge and fill it close to the top to reduce air exposure. That helps keep it tasting super fresh. I’d just wait to add any ice until right before serving! Best, Elaine
Mary Kay Tam says
Can you make in advance like before a volleyball game or doesn’t last well? If yes how long can you keep?
Elaine Gordon says
Hi Mary Kay! I usually enjoy it right away since it's best when fresh, but you can definitely make it ahead of time. Just store it in an airtight glass container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. I recommend filling the container as close to the top as possible to minimize air exposure — that helps preserve the flavor and freshness. And if you're prepping in advance, skip the ice until you're ready to serve. Hope that helps, and good luck at the game! Best, Elaine
Amber says
Can you make a big batch to store in the fridge? If so How would you do that?
Elaine Gordon says
Yes! I think it is best when fresh but you can store in an airtight container for a couple days. Try and fill it to the top to avoid air exposure as much as possible. Shake or re-blend before enjoying.
Amber Lewis says
So how would you adjust the measurements to get a bigger batch? Just double the ingredients?
Elaine Gordon says
Yes, exactly, you can double or triple the recipe by doubling or tripling all of the ingredients. There is a built in feature in the recipe card above where you can select x2 or x3 so it does all the math for you! I hope you enjoy! I usually make a double batch myself!
Nancy says
OMG - these are SO good!! I’ve made the blueberry and the cucumber so far and love both. Thank you so much for another great recipe!
Elaine Gordon says
Thank you so much, Nancy! I’m so glad you’re loving them! Blueberry and cucumber are both such refreshing picks. The wild blueberry is packed with antioxidants, and that purple color is just unbeatable. I love that the cucumber one sneaks in a veggie and delivers so much natural hydration (plus all the goodness cucumbers bring!). It’s so refreshing—it always makes me feel like I’m at a spa! Green apple is actually my personal favorite—it’s bright, perfectly sweet, and just the right amount of tart. Let me know if you give that one a try next! 💜💚🍏
Sandra Rivera says
Can I use sea salt?
Elaine Gordon says
Yes, you can use any salt you’d like! I always recommend using an unrefined mineral salt for the added trace minerals and health benefits. My go-to is Redmond’s Real Salt – you can find it here: https://amzn.to/4eeY8y5 – but Celtic Sea Salt is another great unrefined option too. Both work perfectly in Nature’s Gatorade. Just make sure it says unrefined for the most benefits.
Janice Cook says
Delicious! I was hesitant to make it because I'm not a fan of coconut water. I made the blueberry and we loved it! Can't wait to make other flavors. Thank you!
Elaine Gordon says
Thank you so much for the five star review, Janice! I also don't love coconut water and find that you cannot detect it in this one. I'm glad you agree! My favorite flavor is green apple - I hope you get a chance to try that one soon! Happy summer! Best, Elaine
Jessica says
So easy and delicious!!! Made the green apple, will definitely be making again!
Elaine Gordon says
Thank you so much, Jessica! I'm so happy you enjoyed this one. Green apple is my favorite flavor out of all of them. I love that you love it too (and found it easy to make). I hope you enjoy it all summer long! Best, Elaine
Denise says
I tried the watermelon & lime version with 1/8 tsp salt & 1 tsp of maple syrup (although it doesn't really need) it is so good & refreshing!
Elaine Gordon says
Thank you so much for the five star review, Denise! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the watermelon/lime flavor combo! I agree that if you have a sweet melon you don't necessarily need to add the maple syrup. It can be customized to your preferences for sure. I hope you get a chance to try more of the flavors this summer. My personal favorite is the green apple flavor. Best, Elaine
Kathleen Brian says
This looks very good.
Elaine Gordon says
Thank you so much, Kathleen! I hope you get a chance to try all the flavors sometime soon! Please let me know if you do what your favorite flavor ends up being! Best, Elaine
Clayton says
Am I able to use a juicer for all the fruits to combine everything at once?
Elaine Gordon says
Hi Clayton: You can juice the fruit and then add for sure. Then you won't need to starin. Please see this blog post for how to use a juicer with Nature's Gatorade: https://www.eatingbyelaine.com/natures-fruit-punch/ (see the recipe card note section). I hope this helps! Best, Elaine
Ang says
Has anyone tried to can these recipes?
Elaine Gordon says
Hi Ang, Thank you for submitting this question. I'm eager to hear what others say. I personally have not. Best, Elaine
