These Fresh Sparkling Margaritas are bright, citrusy, lightly sweet and so refreshing. They're made with freshly squeezed lime juice, a splash of fresh orange juice instead of orange liqueur, a touch of maple syrup or Bee Free Honey and a bubbly finish from sparkling mineral water.

Happy Margarita Day, Cinco de Mayo, taco night, summer Friday, backyard hangout or honestly just because. These fresh lime margaritas are ready for all of it.
Why You'll Love These Fresh Sparkling Margaritas
These margaritas are made without store-bought margarita mix, refined sugar or orange liqueur. Instead, we're using real citrus and a simple natural sweetener to get that bright, fresh flavor.
The lime juice gives them that classic margarita tartness, the orange juice adds a little natural sweetness and the sparkling water makes them feel extra light and refreshing.
They are:
- Naturally sweetened
- Made with fresh lime juice and fresh orange juice
- Easy to make as a cocktail or mocktail
- Light, bubbly, and refreshing
- Perfect for Cinco de Mayo, Margarita Day, summer parties or taco night
Fresh Classic Margarita Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients to make these fresh sparkling margaritas.
- Fresh lime juice: This is the star of the recipe. Freshly squeezed lime juice makes such a difference here, so skip the bottled kind if you can.
- Fresh orange juice: Instead of orange liqueur, I use freshly squeezed orange juice. It adds natural sweetness and fresh citrus flavor without needing triple sec or Cointreau.
- Optional - Tequila blanco: Use 100% agave tequila blanco for the classic cocktail version. I like 1800 Silver Tequila, but any good blanco tequila works.
- Maple syrup or Bee Free Honey: Just a tablespoon lightly sweetens the margaritas without refined sugar. You can always add more, one teaspoon at a time, if you like a sweeter drink.
- Fine salt: Just a pinch brings the flavors together.
- Sparkling water: This gives the margaritas their bubbly finish. I love Topo Chico or Lemon Spindrift here.
- Crushed ice: A full glass of crushed ice makes these feel extra cold and refreshing.

The Best Margarita Garnish
It isn't a margarita without the garnish, right?
For the classic salted rim, I like to run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass and dip it into coarse salt mixed with fresh lime zest. It gives you that perfect salty, citrusy little hit with every sip.
For a pretty "waterfall" look, run the lime wedge along just one side of the glass instead of the full rim, then dip that side into the salt mixture. It looks beautiful and feels a little more special without any extra effort.
You can also add lime rounds or lime wedges to each glass. Paper umbrella optional, but always fun.
Lime Sugar Salt Rim Option
For a slightly sweeter rim, make a lime-sugar-salt mixture.
Combine:
Zest of 1 lime
2 tablespoons coarse salt
2 tablespoons maple sugar
Pulse everything in a mini food processor or small blender until combined. Use this mixture in place of the regular lime salt rim.
It gives the margaritas a sweet-salty-citrusy edge that is so good with the tart lime flavor.
Virgin Margarita Recipe
To make these fresh sparkling margaritas into mocktails, simply leave out the tequila.
The combination of fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, natural sweetener, crushed ice, and sparkling water makes such a fun and refreshing virgin margarita. It still feels festive and fancy, but it's basically fresh citrus and bubbles.
My kids get so excited when they have their own special drink like the adults. Lemon Spindrift, Topo Chico or any sparkling mineral water works beautifully here.
Can I Make These Without Sparkling Water?
Yes. If you do not want sparkling margaritas, you can skip the sparkling water and pour the margarita mixture into two glasses instead of three.
This will make two stronger classic-style margaritas rather than three lighter sparkling margaritas.

Virgin Margarita Recipe
If the kids are joining us and want their own fancy drinks (or I'm not feeling like an adult beverage!), I replace the tequila with sparkling water. Our favorite is Lemon Spindrift or Topo Chico! They get so excited when they get a fun drink like mom and dad, and it's basically just fresh juice and sparkling water.

Fresh Classic Margaritas - Mocktail or Cocktail (refined sugar-free)
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 3 1x
- Diet: Vegan
Description
These fresh sparkling margaritas are bright, citrusy, lightly sweet, and so refreshing. They are made with freshly squeezed lime juice, a splash of orange juice instead of orange liqueur, a touch of maple syrup or Bee Free Honey, and a bubbly finish from sparkling mineral water.
The result is a lighter, fresher margarita that is perfectly tart, not too sweet, and so good over a glass full of crushed ice.
Ingredients
For the margaritas
- 4 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice, about 8 limes
- 2 ounces freshly squeezed orange juice, about 1 Valencia orange
- optional: 6 ounces tequila blanco (100% agave - such as 1800 silver tequila)
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or Bee Free Honey, plus more to taste
- Pinch of fine salt
For serving
- Coarse salt, for the rim
- Lime zest, for mixing with the salt
- Crushed ice
- 2, 12 ounce cans of sparkling water, for topping each glass (I love Lemon Spindrift)
- Lime rounds or lime wedges, for garnish
Instructions
- Add the freshly squeezed lime juice, freshly squeezed orange juice, tequila if using, maple syrup or Bee Free Honey and a pinch of salt to a cocktail shaker. The orange juice is used in place of orange liqueur, which is often used in classic margarita recipes. It adds natural sweetness and fresh citrus flavor.
- Fill the shaker with ice cubes and shake well until chilled. Taste and adjust the sweetness as needed. For a sweeter margarita, add more maple syrup or Bee Free Honey, 1 teaspoon at a time, then shake again briefly to combine.
- To prepare the salted rim, add coarse salt and lime zest to a small plate that is slightly wider than the top of your margarita glasses. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass to lightly moisten it. For a more styled look, run the lime wedge along just one side of the glass to create a waterfall effect.
- For a lime-sugar-salt rim, combine the zest of 1 lime, 2 tablespoons coarse salt, and 2 tablespoons maple sugar. Pulse in a mini food processor or small blender until combined, then use this mixture in place of the regular lime salt rim.
- Dip the moistened rim, or the moistened side of the glass, into the lime salt or lime-sugar-salt mixture and gently roll to coat.
- Fill each glass all the way to the top with crushed ice.
- Pour the margarita mixture evenly into three glasses, filling each glass about two-thirds full if you plan to top with sparkling mineral water. I love Topo Chico or Lemon Spindrift here because they add the perfect bubbly finish.
- Top each glass with sparkling mineral water until full. Garnish with lime rounds or lime wedges and enjoy immediately.
- If you do not want to top the margaritas with sparkling water, skip the sparkling water and fill two glasses all the way up with the margarita mixture instead. This will make 2 stronger margaritas rather than 3 lighter sparkling margaritas.
