Honey mustard sauce has always been my all-time favorite condiment. I just love the creamy, sweet and bold flavor combo. Use this easy homemade sauce for dipping, drizzling and spreading on any dish that needs a zesty kick!
Aah, honey mustard sauce. It's a classic that I can't get enough of, but as a vegan my personal preference is to avoid animal products, and that includes real honey. Enter this vegan honey mustard sauce - super easy to make with unbelievable flavor, way better than what you'll find at the grocery store!
My favorite way to use this sauce is as a dip with sweet potato fries. It also works great as a vegetable dip or salad dressing.
I love making condiments like this at home because I can totally customize the flavors to my liking. I can make it sweeter, spicier, saltier...any way I'm feeling! This is a very forgiving recipe and easily adaptable to your taste with the three base ingredients.
You can adjust the proportions as you see fit but the recipe below is my ideal combination. The sweet-and-tangy flavor combination just works with so many dishes!
Ingredients
All you need for this vegan honey mustard are three simple ingredients. See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for quantities.
- Dijon mustard: This is what gives the sauce its bold, spicy flavor.
- Vegan sour cream or vegan mayonnaise: I prefer to use this 5-minute homemade sour cream, which is simply a blend of cashews, water, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and salt. However, you can just as easily use store-bought vegan sour cream or mayo!
- Pure maple syrup: This liquid sweetener keeps the sauce refined sugar-free.
How to Make this Vegan Honey Mustard
1. Whisk the ingredients. Add Dijon mustard, vegan sour cream (or mayo) and maple syrup to a small bowl or glass jar. Use a whisk to combine well until no clumps remain.
2. Taste and adjust flavors as needed. For a stronger, spicier flavor, add more Dijon mustard. For a more mild, creamy version, add more vegan sour cream (or mayo). For a sweeter sauce, add more maple syrup. Whisking in a pinch of salt here is optional but helps to bring out all the flavors.
3. Serve. Use immediately or store in a small airtight container for up to two weeks. Refresh before using by whisking again.
How to Customize this Vegan Honey Mustard Recipe
Simply whisk in more of any single ingredient to achieve the results you're craving:
- Want it spicier? Add more mustard.
- Want it creamier? Add more vegan sour cream or mayo.
- Want it sweeter? Add more maple syrup.
You can also thin the sauce out with a little water if you want a pourable tangy dressing for salads.
Does the Type of Mustard Matter?
Yes! Different mustards vary in terms of texture and flavor.
Dijon mustard has a smooth and creamy texture that allows it to mix into sauces and salad dressings seamlessly.
Spicy brown mustard is similar to Dijon in terms of spiciness, but completely different in terms of texture. It is coarser and has a grainy-like texture that simply just doesn't work as well for mixing into a sauce or creamy dressing.
Yellow mustard is made from yellow mustard seeds which are much more mild in terms of heat than Dijon mustard, which is made from brown mustard seeds.
Serving Suggestions
Serve as a dip: My daughter, who is also vegan, says this is her favorite dipping sauce because she loves adding honey flavor to vegan nuggets, french fries and these air fryer potato wedges. I personally love dipping roasted veggies such as sweet potatoes or Brussels sprouts in it!
Serve on a salad: I often use this as a delicious dressing for my favorite salads, veggie bowls and grain bowls.
Serve on veggie burgers: I highly recommend this condiment on my quinoa black bean veggie burgers!
I hope you enjoy this simple recipe as much as I do. This homemade version using whole foods is way better than any store-bought honey mustard sauce I've tried!
