This fun take on Orange Creamsicle Smoothie is my go-to smoothie when I'm looking for a quick, refreshing immune-boost.  It is just three ingredients, vegan, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and paleo-friendly too!

    3-Ingredient Creamsicle Smoothie

This 3-Ingredient Orange Creamsicle Smoothie recipe serves two, but honestly sometimes I gulp down the entire batch myself.  One batch has an entire orange in it (minus the rind). This means you are getting all the amazing benefits this fruit has to offer including all the fiber and nutrients from the pith and pulp. The white pith of the orange is left on in the preparation and not only does it boost the nutritional profile of this drink, but it also makes it extra frothy and creamy.

    Creamsicle Smoothie Ingredients

Let's Make a Creamsicle Smoothie with Oranges!

And now to talk about the flavor combo going on in this Orange Creamsicle Smoothie.  Vanilla and orange are a flavor match made in heaven if you ask me. Remember creamsicle pops when you were growing up?  This is like the healthy liquid version of that.  I feel like a sophisticated kid slurping down this creamy, sweet treat.

    Orange Smoothie in Blender

This Orange Creamsicle Smoothie isn't watered down by ice cubes since the orange has been frozen in advance.  It is lightly sweetened with dates (or you can use maple syrup) making it refined sugar free.  And the best part of all is that it comes together in about 3 minutes, so you can whiz it up in your blender first thing in the morning for a refreshing and healthy start to your day.

Why You Should Eat an Orange!

As we all know, oranges provide loads of immune-boosting vitamin C and that's why it's the main ingredient in this Orange Creamsicle Smoothie. And this time of year, we can all use more of that!  In fact, evidence suggests that for some people, high doses of vitamin C might actually shorten a cold by as much as one and a half days. In addition, vitamin C fights free radicals to prevent or delay certain cancers and heart disease. It is essential for the growth and repair of bodily tissues, helps heal wounds and repairs and maintains healthy cartilage, bones, teeth and skin.

    Kids Love this Smoothie Too!

I made this Orange Creamsicle Smoothie for my girls in place of orange juice and they both went crazy over it.  And, I felt good knowing they were getting the whole fruit and not just the juice. It really is a great way to sneak in vitamin C for your little ones.  In general, things in liquid form seem to be very popular with my girls, so it didn't take them long to slurp this one down.  Soon they were both asking for more.

    Vegan Orange Smoothie

As always, this Orange Creamsicle Smoothie recipe is vegan, gluten-free, soy-free and peanut-free.  It can also be nut-free depending on which non-dairy milk you choose. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family does.  If you give it a try, I would love to see your pictures.  Please tag them #eatingbyelaine on social media so I can see.  Cheers!

    Description

This fun take on Orange Creamsicle Smoothie is my go-to smoothie when I'm looking for a quick, refreshing immune-boost.  It is just three ingredients, vegan, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and paleo-friendly too!

    Ingredients

    Scale
    • 1 large navel orange, peeled and frozen*
    • 1 ¼ cup unsweetened vanilla non-dairy milk (such as almond milk)
    • 2 soft pitted Medjool dates OR 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

    Instructions

    1. Place all ingredients in a high speed blender and process until smooth and creamy. If you have a tamper for your high speed blender you can use that to help get it started. Otherwise, you may need to add extra milk to help thin it out. Alternatively, you can let the frozen orange chunks thaw out a minute or two before blending.
    2. Taste and adjust flavor and texture to your liking.  See notes.
    3. Pour into two glasses and enjoy immediately.  You can garnish with my Homemade Coconut Whipped Cream and orange zest if desired.

    Notes

    * The night before making this recipe I slice the peel off the orange but leave the white pith (fiber and nutrients are found here). I then halve the orange and slice each half into 6 even chunks. There should be about 12 chunks total. To freeze the orange chunks, place them on a flat surface lined with parchment paper or wax paper to prevent sticking. Allow space between each orange chunk so that they are not touching. Otherwise, they will freeze together and your blender will not be able to handle such large frozen chunks. Be sure the flat surface you select can fit in your freezer. I freeze overnight but you can try freezing a couple hours or until orange segments are fully hardened. See image below for how to freeze the orange.

If you do not have vanilla flavored non-dairy milk you can simply add ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract to the smoothie before blending.

For an extra frosty smoothie add one cup of ice after the first blend.

For a thicker/creamier smoothie add ¼ cup raw slivered blanched almonds (not sliced almonds).  This also adds plant-based protein and healthy fats to the smoothie.

For a nutrition boost add 1 tablespoon chia seeds and/or 1 tablespoon hemp seeds.

For extra orange flavor add orange zest from one orange, a drop of orange extract or ¼ cup orange juice.  You can also add a second orange if desired.
